Following the initiative by the Conseil de Concertation de l'Enseignement Officiel (CCEO), the Ligue de l'Enseignement et de l'Education Permanente (LEEP), the Fédération des Associations des Parents de l'Enseignement Officiel (FAPEO) and the Centre d'Action Laïque (CAL), higher education establishments organized a number of events between 19 and 24 March 2001 in order to reaffirm the basic values underpinning higher education.
On Wednesday 21 March 2001, at noon, the Haute Ecole de Bruxelles unveiled a logo on its walls symbolizing the unity of the three official education networks in adhering to these values. This event coincided with the spring celebrations of the Official Schools.
On the same day, ESI for the first time organized an afternoon of speeches on ethical questions relating to the increasingly widespread and often intensive use of the new technologies. The event had been initiated six months previous by Mr. Jean-marie VAN LOOCK in the course of meetings with the organizers of these Official Education Days. The aim was to reflect upon the subject within a humanist vision rejecting the idea that machines should be allowed to dictate people's lives and thoughts. The event was aimed at ESI faculty and sympathisers interested in this issue as well as second-year students.
Since then, similar events have been organized around mid-March with a view to meeting a need to reflect upon the ethical and social impact of the new technologies. The initiative also complements the work of ESI teachers who are concerned about these questions and enrich their classes in an attempt to heighten their students' awareness.
