General course description

Information and transmission physics

The course includes two parts. Firstly, it focuses on the production mode of electronic signals, mainly analog and digital. Secondly, it elaborates on the transmission mode of the signals. The course also provides elements of information on the new technologies.

Learning basic skills

High school physics notions: electricity, waves and optic

Course Aims

Information is often and wrongly said to be "immaterial". The course aims here at flushing out the highly material nature of signals producing and transmitting INFORMATION (electrons, light waves: photons). The first objective is to integrate the basic notions of analog and digital electronics (in parallel with the course on Computer structure) useful to industrial applications. Afterwards, the course goes on to develop a theory on information (Shannon) and on the transmission of signals necessary to the comprehension of the courses on networks (physical layer) as well as the second-year course on electronics.
